Around the MuseumFall 2004PRISONER OF WAR EXHIBIT
Our new POW display is located in a small alcove on the north wall of the Museum. It displays the story of the prisoner of war experience. A parachute hangs from one corner depicting exit from a crippled aircraft. Farther along the wall we see photos and narrative describing capture and then interrogation. Proceeding along, we see prison camp life during captivity, while “waiting on winning”. Finally, freedom, as the allied forces liberate the camps. On the last wall we have a list of the 731 men of the 390th Bomb Group who endured the hardships of incarceration. This display was designed under the direction of the POW Exhibit committee consisting of Hank Plume, Dick Sawyer and Bill Pace. All of these men were prisoners of war and some of the narrative includes their personal experiences. The Veterans Association financed this project and dedicated it to museum use during the recent reunion. Be sure to take a close look at this fine exhibit on your next trip to the museum.
