“Food Drop” Display Redesigned. The “Food Drop” display, funded by the 390th Veterans Association” has been redesigned to make it more attractive, less obtrusive and moveable. The redesign was completed during the Christmas season. The display tells the story of the aid given to the starving people of Holland at the end of the WWII. As the Allied Forces swept through the continent at the end of the war, there remained a pocket of starving Hollanders that were cut off from their normal supplies that had been exhausted by the German invaders. The Eighth Air Force came to their aid with humanitarian missions. There were 6 food drop missions, referred to as “Chow Hound,” to Holland that the 390th Bomb Group was involved in during the month of May 1945:
To this day the Hollanders are deeply appreciative of our efforts. Their visits to our Museum as well as some of the other visitors are emotionally impressed with the tremendous effort by the bomber people in carrying out this humanitarian project.
Fred Sachs, Director of displays, aided by John Day, 100th BG veteran, and Bob Langston are commended for their effort. This renovation has been accomplished at minimum cost utilizing their volunteered effort and the existing art work from the original display. The only added cost being the paint and the newly added vinyl lettering. This is in keeping with the goal of presenting the most history possible of the 390th BG to the viewing public considering the resources available. Andy Anzanos |
