"Spot Remover"

Number of Aircraft: 230246
Derivation of Name: In July, 1943 Colonel LeMay, Commander of the 4th Wing, gave a welcome address to the 390th Bomb Group members. He referred to the British doing night bombing while the 390th would be doing daylight precision bombing. LeMay referred to the British as general cleaners and to the B17 aircrews as "spot removers." Thus the name for this aircraft.
