In May, the board of directors of The 390th Memorial Museum Foundation adopted a revised Statement of Purpose which contained a small, but important, modification which had been suggested by Veterans Association Vice President Norm Coats. The revised wording is intended to stress the permanence of the Foundation's name and purpose, and is reproduced below along with the Mission Statement:
Taken together, these statements identify the Foundation as an educational institution whose purpose is to serve as a memorial and, in the broadest of terms, states how the Foundation will perform its educational mission.
They will serve as a guide to the Foundation's plans and future activities. They serve to unify the Foundation's leadership, membership, and staff upon the accomplishment of an identified goal. The Statement of Purpose clearly states the results the Foundation is trying to achieve: To be a viable memorial to, and preserve the history and heritage of, the men of the 390th Bomb Group and specified other organizations. The Mission Statement identifies the Foundation as an educational institution as well as the broad strategies to be undertaken to implement the Statement of Purpose; it helps to focus those participating in the Foundation's planning and activities.
These two Statements are essential prerequisites to the planning process which is just getting under way in recent months, and whose progress is reported in successive issues of the Bulletin. This process will result in the creation of a written, definitive, comprehensive Long Range Plan to guide the Foundation's programs and activities. This planning will be accomplished by several Planning Task Forces, each of which is generally described in a sheet enclosed with this issue. It is hoped that many founder members, both veteran and descendant, will participate in this process.
