WAR STORIES

Edmund M. Hajduk

Sergeant, Ball Turret Gunner

12/29/1923 - 9/3/1999

Edmund was from Depew, New York prior to entering the Air Force.

The Hajduk ancestors were originally from Poland and Polish was spoken in the home where he grew up.  Since the crew was shot down over occupied Poland he was able to speak to the farmers whose field he landed in.  This however created a crowd of people surrounding him enabling the German military to locate him that much faster where they took him prisoner.

During his time as a POW he was able to get a small notebook where he wrote about the mission and capture as well as some of the daily activities at the camp.  Fellow POWs wrote poems and drew some pictures in his notebook.

He returned to his home state after the war and was married hometown girl.  He had a son named Daniel and a daughter named Patricia.

Edmund worked for Ford Motor Co. as an assembly line worker in NY.  He later transferred with Ford in 1958 to the Ohio plant where he became a manager until he retired.

He enjoyed fishing and was active in The Fraternal Order of Eagles organization.  After retirement he divorced and settled in the harbor town of Vermilion, Ohio off of Lake Erie until his death.
